kebanyakan orang mungkin cuma kenal phil collins
sebagai penyanyi pop-rock, sebenarnya karir musik phil adalah sebagai
pemain drum dan sampai sekarang pun phil masih dianggap sebagai salah
satu dari drummer legendaris dunia.
karir musik/rekaman phil di mulai sebagai drummer "Flaming Youth"
(1962), setelah rekaman grup ini gagal di pasaran, phil muda sempat
ikut rekaman album george harrison (the beatles) sebagai pemain perkusi di lagu The Art of Dying.
tahun 1970 phil ikut audisi drummer untuk band prog-rock Genesis dan di band ini pula sebenarnya karir phil sebagai vokalis di mulai, vokal phil pertama ada di lagu "For Absent Friends" (album Nursery Cryme) dan satu lagi di lagu "More Fool Me" (album Selling England by the Pound)
tahun 1975 vokalis utama Genesis peter gabriel
keluar dari band saat tour Genesis berlangsung, saat itulah phil
terpaksa menggantikan tugas Gabriel sebagai Vokalis band dan hal ini
berlanjut sampai sekarang.....sehingga menjadiphil collins yang kita kenal sekarang.....
*phil juga satu2nya drummer yang di percaya bisa menjadi pengganti john bonham di led zeppelin oleh jimmy page dan robert plant
phil juga tercatat sebagai drummer di album solo Robert Plant di album : Pictures at Eleven [1982] dan The Principle of Moments
